I
was trained, by William (Bill) Greer, in the restoration and reproduction
of antique European furniture, specialty one-of-a-kind faux finishes (wood
grain, marble, malachite, and others). We worked on location executing hand-crafted
interior finishes in fine luxury homes. I apprenticed for 6 years (1970-1976)
in Bill's small, high quality shop, located in Santa Monica, California.
I performed responsibilities in all aspects of the business. In 1976, I
started my own restoration company. Soon to be restoring luxury automobiles.
My involvement with Roll-Royce and Bentley automobiles
began in a tragic way. Living in Los Angeles, in the winter of '76', there
was a day of record rain. A good friend had his 1961 Bentley "S2" parked
in a subterranean garage. The garage flooded. His car was 4 ft. deep in
the big L.A. muddy. Needless to say, we spent the next few hours pulling
the car to safety and drying it out. The Bentley was put on a flatbed and
brought to my shop. We dismantled the whole interior (seats, dashboard-all
wood trim, carpeting, everything!). We drained the motor, transmission,
and rear end fluids. Since the Bentley was already torn apart, it was decidedly
a project. There were a few rust spots that needed attention and some minor
body damage. The interior wood was in bad shape. After a few months, working
on the car when possible, it was finished. The Bentley with new paint in
and out looked brand new. You would never know it was caught in the Great
L.A. Flood.Fast-forward too many years, is it possible, I've been involved in many restorations. I've restored cars up and down the West and East Coasts and in between, and some cars from Asia. I moved to Seattle, Washington from Los Angeles, California in 1994. Where did the time go? Anthony Buchbinder |
